Hollywood TV star inspires students to achieve success through Foundation
by Jim Lilienthal

Actor-director William Allen Young, who starred as Pvt. Henson in the Academy Award-nominated film, “A Soldier’s Story,” is quietly changing lives in the community of South Central, Los Angeles.
Young, who grew up in South Central, L.A., graduated from Locke High School where drop-out rates are among the highest in the nation, is one of the most successful working actors in Hollywood. Despite his fame and fortune, Young has never forgotten the people of the community that helped to nurture and inspire him as a child.
In 1985, Young established the Young Foundation, an LA-based nonprofit organization that provides tutoring, mentoring, leadership training, and scholarships to inspire students in the LA Unified School District to achieve excellence and pursue a college education. The Foundation’s partnership with LAUSD has helped to improve the academic performance of students in the District’s low-performing Priority Staffing Program schools.
Participating schools include; Fremont, Locke, Jordan, Jefferson, Manual Arts, Crenshaw, Washington Prep, Dorsey, and Hamilton.
“Mr. Young is a tremendous asset and role model for our youth,” said Asst. Supt., Dan Isaacs. “His involvement with our schools will have a positive impact on our students’ success.”
“I’m just giving back that which was given to me as a child–a chance to succeed in life,” says Young. “All I know is these kids need our help. How can we say no?”
Our Story
Creating a ‘Culture of Success’
The work of the Young Center actually began in 1985 when celebrated actor-director William Allen Young, established the Young Foundation. Mr. Young, who grew up in South Central L.A. where drop out rates are among the highest in the nation, realized the need for effective youth development in local communities to help young people develop the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to rise above limitations and achieve success in college, business and life. Without financial support or corporate sponsorships, Mr. Young took matters into his own hands.
The 1990s
In 1987, Mr. Young forged a strategic partnership between the Foundation and LA Unified School District to develop and implement a five-year education incentive plan to improve student academic performance and college matriculation rates in the District’s lowest-performing schools. Mr. Young used his influence in the community to mobilize parents, teachers, and retired professionals to provide academic tutoring, mentoring, and classroom support for students and teachers at failing schools. The Foundation sponsored districtwide academic contests and scholarships for contest winners to encourage them to continue their education beyond high school. Mr. Young additionally used his celebrity to focus media attention on the issue of education inequity in America and the challenges faced by youth in underserved communities in their efforts to obtain a college education.
