Young Center Alumn Michael Tubbs launches bid for California Lt. Governor

 

Former Stockton Mayor and alum Michael Tubbs is running for lieutenant governor of California.  Tubbs was one of the country’s youngest mayors of an American city and launched the country's first guaranteed income program for the poor.​  "Being a part of the Young Center literally changed my life trajectory and helped me become who I am today."  Tubbs participated in the Young Center's California Youth Think Tank program for four years and was selected as a California State Youth Ambassador.  Tubbs currently serves as an advisor to Los Angeles Mayor  Karen Bass.

Alumni Kaelani Amputch-Curtis Creates Scholarship to Help Support Low-Income Youth

 

Young Center alum, Kaelani Amputch-Curtis, has established a scholarship to help support low-income youth participants.  "Being a part of the Young Center was a life-changing experience for me," Kaelani says.  "This inaugural scholarship will help remove the financial hurdle for an exceptional Young Center scholar who embodies tenacity in achieving their goals despite their circumstances."  As a 15-year-old, Kaelani struggled through major health issues while participating in the Young Center's CYTT program.  Her determination to succeed became a source of inspiration for others.  Today, Kaelani is the former Miss Culver City USA and currently serves as Development and Events Coordinator at Imagine LA.

YC Alumni Bianca Falcon Donates Time and Resources to Support Low-Income Youth Participants

 

Attorney, and Young Center alumni, Bianca Falcon, has donated her time and resources to support the organization and its youth participants.  Falcon recently donated funding to help sponsor multiple low-income youth participants.  "Being a part of the Young Center was a life-changing experience for me," Bianca says.  Bianca has represented Fortune 500 companies and is currently an attorney at the Haight Brown & Bonesteel Law Firm.  Bianca participant in the Young Center's CYTT and College Prep Academy programs as a 15-year-old at Ramona Convent High School.

15-Year-Old Alumni Creates STEM Nonprofit Program to Serve Underprivileged Youth

Murad Malik (CYTT Class of 2024) has created his own STEM Education nonprofit called the Drone Education Program.  Murad is currently a junior at Legacy Magnet High School in Tustin, California.   "Every other Friday, I visit a local Title I elementary school to teach students about Mechanical Engineering, Drones, and Artificial Intelligence," says Murad.  "I created the curriculum myself and I present it to them in an interactive manner.  I run this program to spread my passion and knowledge of STEM and enable underprivileged children to explore opportunities they may not have had the chance to otherwise."  Murad, who participated in the 2024 CYTT leadership program, was recently nominated as a California State Youth Ambassador.

2024 California Youth Think Tank Leadership Class Takes on Tough Issue of Guaranteed Basic Income Issue

 

This summer, youth leaders from schools and communities throughout California and other U.S. states converged on Los Angeles to participate in the California Youth Think Tank summer leadership program.  The '24 CYTT leadership class, nicknamed the "The GOATS," researched and debated the issue of Guaranteed Basic Income for all Americans.  They heard expert testimony from Stockton Mayor and Young Center alumni Michael Tubbs, the first major U.S. city to launch a basic income program, and later negotiated the terms of an official resolution which will be presented to local and state government officials for consideration.  ​

New Young Center Scholars Grant at St. Mary's College

 

The Young Center is proud to announce a new Young Center Scholars (YCS) Grant at St. Mary's College of California (SMC).  Young Center alumni who graduate high school with a 3.0 GPA or higher will be guaranteed admission to SMC and will receive a YCS Grant equal to 50% of the cost of tuition.  Students who attend a CA community college first (with 24 transferable units and a 3.0 GPA) will also be guaranteed admission to SMC.​  YCS Grants are renewable each year a recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA.  For more info contact info@theyoungcenter.com
