Young Center Alumni and Former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs is Running for California Lt. Governor
YC alumnus Michael Tubbs is running for lieutenant governor of California, returning to politics four years after becoming one of the country’s youngest mayors and the guaranteed income program for the poor he endorsed made him a star.​ “Oftentimes it’s not about the formal role of a position, but it’s really about the leader in that position…and how they’re able to use that position to get things done and to make it big or to make it meaningful for the people they want to serve,” Tubbs said. Tubbs currently serves as an advisor to LA Mayor Karen Bass.
2024 California Youth Think Tank Leadership Class Takes on Tough Issue of Guaranteed Basic Income Issue
This summer, youth leaders from schools and communities throughout California and other U.S. states converged on Los Angeles to participate in the California Youth Think Tank summer leadership program. The '24 CYTT leadership class debated the issue of Guaranteed Basic Income for all Americans. They heard expert testimony from Stockton Mayor and Young Center alumni Michael Tubbs, the first major U.S. city to launch a basic income program, and later negotiated a recommendations which will be presented to government officials for consideration. ​
2024 CYTT Leadership Award Winners Receive Top Honors During Closing Award Ceremony
Twelve young scholars are recipients of the Young Center's Leadership Award for their outstanding contribution to the CYTT program. Winners are: Micah More (Loyola), Hafez Sami (Culver City), Joaquin Fonseca (San Pedro), Samuel Avendano (Granada Hills), Sara Miranda (Venice), Sydney Curry (Harvard-Westlake), Noor Malik (Legacy Magnet), Matthew Sugiyama (Compolindo), Samara Natalie Chen, (Evergreen Valley), Kaplan (Berkeley), Karyma Ortiz (Math & Science Prep), Lamberto Pangan (Whitney), and James Napier (Excel)
Young Center Scholars Grant established at St. Mary's College in Fall '25
The Young Center is proud to announce the Young Center Scholars (YCS) Grant at St. Mary's College of California (SMC). Young Center alumni who graduate high school with a 3.0 GPA or higher will be guaranteed admission to SMC and will qualify for a grant equal to 50% of the cost of tuition. Students who attend a CA community college first can also qualify for the grant.​ YCS Grants are renewable each year a recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA. For more info contact info@theyoungcenter.com
YC Alumni Creates Scholarship to Help Support Future Young Center Participants
Alumni Kaelani Amputch-Curtis has created a scholarship to help support low-income program participants. "Being a part of the Young Center was a life-changing experience for me," Kaelani says. "This inaugural scholarship will remove the financial hurdle for an exceptional Young Center applicant who embodies tenacity in achieving their goals despite their circumstances." Kaelani currently serves as Development & Events Coordinator at Imagine LA.
15-Year-Old Alumni Creates STEM Nonprofit Program for Underprivileged Youth

Alumni Murad Malik has created a STEM nonprofit called the Drone Education Program. Every Friday, Murad visits a local Title I elementary school to teach students about Mechanical Engineering, Drones, and Artificial Intelligence. "I want to spread my passion and knowledge of STEM and inspire underprivileged kids to explore opportunities they may not have had a chance to otherwise," Murad says. Murad is a junior at Legacy Magnet High School in Tustin, CA.
California Fellows Program sets Application Deadline
The Capital Fellows Programs are nationally recognized public policy fellowships which offer unique experiences in policy-making and development in each branch of government. Capital Fellows spend 10-11 months as part of a cohort working in a Legislative, Executive or Judicial Branch office. Applications for the 2025-2026 cohort of Capital Fellows will open mid-September 2024. Application deadline is December 8, 2024.
